Patrick’s Day Special – Top Irish Whiskey

As St. Patrick’s Day celebrations are well and truly in motion, the Bevvy of the Week, this week is all things Irish Whiskey.

We are spoilt for choice these days with the amount of good Irish whiskey there is on offer, and over the years I have featured many of them here on The Life of Stuff as a ‘Bevvy of the Week‘.

I compiled a similar list to this feature a handful of years ago with some of my all time favourite whiskeys, but as Irish Whiskey keeps on growing, and keeps getting more popular, there are plenty more to add.

Black Bush

This is a great whiskey and probably one of my favourites. This whiskey is made in the North of Ireland but the grain that is used to make this great drink comes from Midleton in the South, and has been since the 1970’s. Read more here.

Proclamation Irish Whiskey

Really enjoyed this whiskey. Soft, subtle fruit aromas on the nose that follow through to the palate. There’s a touch of sweetness present from being distilled and aged in American oak and finishes with a lingering toasty feel. Read more here.

Powers Three Swallows

Powers Three Swallow Release is a single pot still whiskey produced in the Midleton Distillery in Cork and it really is a tasty brew. Aromas of spice, herbs and wood follow on to the palate. Read more here.

Jameson Black Barrel

I must say I am very impressed with Jameson Black Barrel. The charred barrel gives the whiskey a true character. This whiskey is exceptionally smooth and creamy, full of spice and vanilla with a soft fruitiness to boot. Read more here.

Teeling Small Batch Whiskey

Teeling Whiskey is aged in rum casks which gives the whiskey a nice sweetness that is notable on the nose and follows through on the palate. It packs a punch at 46% but having said that it is quite smooth. Read more here.

The Liberator Irish Whiskey

The Liberator Irish Whiskey, Port ‘N’ Peat expresses aromas of figs and biscuits, with mouth-filling flavours of fruits, and a touch of caramel. A hint of sweetness is delivered from the port casks and the complimentary presents of the peated malts to finish is just perfect. Read more here.

This whiskey is aged in bourbon casks and is a blend of single malt and grain whiskey. Ageing the whiskey in bourbon cask gives the whiskey a smooth slightly sweet style. Read more here.

Green Spot is matured for six to seven years, linseed and menthol are the dominant characters with some great sherry notes coming through. Read more here

Knappouge Castle 12 Year Old has aromas of vanilla and freshly baked bread, nicely balanced on the palate with a nice richness and a fresh and light fruit character. Read more here

This is a very smooth Irish whiskey. Aromas of caramel with that malty character very present on the nose. Soft fruitiness followed through to the palate and the finish is sweet with a touch of spice. Read more here.
