For this week’s Bevvy of the Week – I would like to recommend a red wine from Hungary called Bulls Blood. This wine was quite popular some years ago but its popularity has died down somewhat so it can be hard to find.
The name Bulls Blood comes from legend. Back in around the 16th century the Turks were invading Southern Hungary. And just before battle, the Hungarians were seen drinking a black drink. Now, because they fought with no fear and for the way they fought, word quickly spread that the warriors were drinking Bulls Blood. And that it was making them fight so fearless. The truth of the matter though, was that it was just the local brew from the monastery.
There are a few variations of grape in this wine but the main grape is Kadarka. It’s a medium to full bodied wine with a soft plummy and raspberry character. And it goes really well with a stew. You should be able to pick up a bottle for around €11.
