Super Simple Cake Pops

Please note that this super simple cake pops recipe is made with a cake pop mould.

I love baking with my little boys, but more importantly they love it too. This cake pops recipe is a big hit with them, not only because they can decorate them themselves but the recipe also allows for an additional tray of buns they can decorate and nibble on too.

This recipe has a simple base of flour, sugar, butter and eggs. For the toppings we used melted milk chocolate and a mixture of crushed nuts, because that’s what we love. But you can use your favourite toppings – from coloured icing to ‘hundreds and thousands’. Change the toppings for special events, make ‘eyeballs’ for Halloween, or bling them up for the Christmas festivities.

Method:

  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C.
  2. If you have a food processor you can mix all the ingredients at the same time.

  3. If you are doing it by hand, mix the butter and flour together first, then add the caster sugar, and finally the eggs. Mix until you have a smooth batter-like texture.
  4. Fill the moulds 3/4 way to the top, to prevent spillage – in these photos I overfilled a little. Use the leftover mixture to make some simple buns you can decorate later too.

  5. Place the top on and place in the center of your oven and bake for about 20 mins.
  6. Take the cake pops out of the oven and allow them to cool. When they have, remove them from the mould. If they have spilled over, just gently trim excess away.

  7. To add the sticks (we reuse ice-pop sticks), lightly dip the sticks into the melted chocolate first then push them gently into the baked cake pops – this helps support the stick. If you’re using icing as a coating use this instead.

  8. Then it’s topping time – coat your cake pops completely in melted chocolate or icing or just do what we did and coat halfway. Then dip into your favourite toppings.

  9. Prop your cake pops up and allow them to set – I used a couple of wine glasses, but propping them up by popping them through a cardboard box works a treat.

  10. Once set, nibble and enjoy!
