Culture Night – Friday September 21st 2012
So Culture Night is nearly upon us again this year, a night full of FREE music and drama performances, art exhibitions, historical tours, readings and talks and the doors to museums, churches, galleries, studio’s and more will be open to the public for FREE!
This year’s Culture Night is due to be Irelands largest yet and I’ll be celebrating the night in Dublin where more than 154 venues will have their doors open to FREE entertainment of some sort. However Dublin isn’t the only place that is celebrating the night, there are towns up and down the Island of Ireland celebrating too.
Further afield, outside this island there are lots of events being organised by The Federation of Irish Societies in London, Leeds, Liverpool and Newcastle and in Belgium The Leuven Institute will open its doors to celebrate the night with its Irish Community.
Back home in Ireland and the town I grew up in, Athy, which is a National Heritage Town, will be celebrating with music galore in the Athy Library. The Athy Community Art Centre will be very busy what with the Colm Walsh’s Exhibition celebrating Athy and its people and with the ‘A taste of Willow Workshop’ with the talented willow weaver and willow sculpture artist Beth Murphy. There will also be a free Craft Class taking place there on Satuday September 22nd for Parents and Children. It’s a fantastic time to celebrate our artistic heritage, try something different, meet old friends and maybe make some new ones.
Organised by the Temple Bar Cultural Trust and supported by the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Fáilte Ireland, regional art offices and local authorities, I think it is very important that we the public also support the event. It should also open our eyes to the rich artistic culture we have on our doorstep that is available 364 days of the year and not just on this one evening.
I’ll be snap happy tomorrow evening moseying around Dublin City and I’m off to download the FREE Culture Night App so as not to miss anything that I’d regret. Here’s the link for iTunes and here’s the one for Android. Enjoy your night!!!
