Q&A’s with Irish Contemporary Artist Niamh Barry

1. What was your inspiration to become an Artist?

I don’t think that becoming an artist is something that you are inspired to do, it is of you……a part of the intrinsic person you are and have always been. I do however think that growing up in a creative environment with open-minded parents fostered and nurtured me on my journey.

2. How did you officially become an Artist?

I don’t think you officially become an artist, there is no graduation ceremony! For me is has been a lifetime of creating, making things and making mistakes that has brought me to where I am today. I hope this journey continues.

3. Where do you take creative inspiration from for your work?

Everywhere but mostly from nature and the human form. I am currently working on a new series based on Japanese trees, this is after a recent trip to Japan.

4. What’s the wackiest request you’ve had to date for commission work?

A client who wanted a piece that could be submerged under water…as yet to be realised. We are working on the technical possibilities of what is and isn’t possible at the moment. It is certainly proving to be challenging but there is always a way, we just need to find it.

5. Where would you love to exhibit your work – the dream?

Oh that is difficult to say, I don’t have a dream location. What I would however like to do is to be able to continue to create new work and work with like-minded creatives, curators and gallerists.

6. What are you working on now? Any exhibitions coming up?

I *recently launched the retrospective of my work at the National Museum of Ireland which is a great honour to have such an exhibition of my work in Ireland’s largest cultural institution. I am working on a new series for an exhibition in NYC in the spring. (Niamh had a piece opening in an exhibition in Miami at Design Miami in December) And then in February I am exhibiting another new piece in Nomad St Moritz.
