Festivals this September on the Island of Ireland
Ireland in September is all about the harvest, and food. There are a number of food festivals the length and breadth of the Island of Ireland this month. And with the Irish tourism initiative of ‘Taste the Island’ fully launched this September 2019 – you’ll spot some in this What’s On article but be sure to keep an eye out in your local town or city for food and drink events that celebrate everything great about local Irish produce.
But first some poetry, and this month’s poem is by William Butler Yeats and his poem September 1913.
This poem was originally titled ‘Romance in Ireland’ and in it Yeats reflects on the Ireland he sees around him. He talks about the materialism and the greed, and the cultural narrow-mindedness. ‘An Ireland enslaved to greed, an Ireland unable to appreciate aesthetic beauty or offer aid to the poor: “Was it for this the wild geese spread/The grey wing upon every tide;/For this that all that blood was shed”‘ (encyclopedia.com)
Do you think Yeats’ view of Ireland 106 years later would be the same?
