Win a Handcrafted and Designed Teddy Bear from Cassandra Taylor
I am a lover of art, design and all things handcrafted especially when they are Irish based. It gives me great pleasure to show support when I can, whether it is through my own personal purchases, word of mouth praise or through blog posts here on The Life of Stuff.
Cassandra Taylor designs first came under the spotlight for me when a friend suggested her page to me on Facebook, of course I liked it immediately as I fell in love with her handcrafted Teddy Bear and Memory Bear designs but I suppose it is only now that I am soon to be a mommy myself that I am really opening my eyes up to the unique and simply wonderful keepsake designs Cassandra Taylor offers.
Cassandra Taylor is South African born. Her design background is in Theatre Design but she currently and has for many a year worked in Film & TV Costume … hence her terrific and artistic sewing skills. She is the mother of two little boys and lives in Co. Dublin. I caught up with Cassandra and asked her to share with The Life of Stuff how her designs came to life, her new Nursery Collection, and where she sees it all going …
When my boys were born I kept their denim’s with an idea to do something with them. I decided on a quilt each and the idea of up-cycling started. I love denim, and the Denim Teddies were the next creation, inspired with up-cycled denim and Schweshwe Print, a Fabric From South Africa … Then I thought, a Teddy from the boys old clothes would be fab, one made from a Stripy Gro-bag, and the other old jeans and a baby-grow, this started a rollercoaster of requests.
Parcels arrive from far and wide, little bundles of baby clothes and I love turning these into Memory Bears. I love that they have that Baby smell, and even more that when the children receive them there is a recognition. I love fabric and colour, and the Nursery Collection is inspired by beautiful fabrics, and a timeless gift.
Each Bear takes approx 5 hours, Memory Bears take longer, I like to take time over the design of them and how all the little clothes will evolve into a bear/ bunny.
I would love to grow the Nursery Collection into a complete collection … teddy/ quilt / bunting/ cot and nursery accessories. A complimentary collection that makes a nursery unique…
I currently have an Etsy Shop, and have started stocking the Nursery Collection in a small gift shop in the Merrion Centre. I love the fact that it’s all growing organically and at a pace that each bear can be bespoke.’ Cassandra Taylor
