Ubode, Essex Street West, Temple Bar, Dublin
So I’m sitting in Ubode with a friend the other day when we get talking to the owner Gary Tiernan … I’ve ordered a sandwich, the mediterranean on focaccia and a black coffee, my friend a tea … It was pretty quiet as it was the lull after breakfast and just before lunch. I enjoyed the peace from the hustle of Temple Bar … Anyway we’re having a wee chat and complimenting Gary on the place, my mind was thinking blog blog blog … when he tells us that he’ll be making changes soon. Furniture, menus and stock. Pretty dramatic it may seem as the place is just lovely as it is and only appreciated when you step through the doors and take it all in. However, Gary has a vision and with the help of his mentor James Burke of Superquinn experience, he plans on focusing even more on Irish produce and supporting Irish businesses. He also plans on replacing the tables, chairs, shelving, even the counter! His weekday and weekend menus may also be facing changes and there may even be an evening menu introduced.
Garry set up Ubode from a small redundancy package of €6,000 three years ago this month. After these three years in Temple Bar, Gary feels that Ubode is established enough to be able to make and afford the changes he wants. It’s now time for Gary to develop on his dream Lifestyle Store and Café. Fair play to the guy! It just shows you if you put your mind to it, you can achieve and maybe even exceed on your plans and dreams.
I asked Gary if I could take a few photo’s, as the blog blog blog thinking took over, he agreed and I told him I may blog about it soon. I was sure Ubode had been blogged about on numerous occasions but Gary advised that he had kept out of the limelight for sometime as he wanted to establish the business first. This period of anti-publicity has obviously ended as he then mentioned Ubode was selected as Café of the Month in the Totally Dublin Magazine, which he had displayed in-store, and which I helped myself to a copy … oh and he welcomed me and my lil blog too.
For more information on the elegantly designed lifestyle ware from well-known lifestyle brands that is sold in Ubode, you can visit the Ubode website here. To connect with the Store and Café why not like them on Facebook here. I have. I’ll also be visiting again and keeping a watch on this Ubode space for the exciting changes ahead.
P.S. The coffee was the strength I love and the sandwich made with irish produce and locally sourced Bretzel Bakery focaccia was tastier than it looked and more filling than I expected it to be. It was really nice having a cold glass bottle of water with a twist brought to our table before we had to ask for some and the service also came with a smile. Just the way I like it.
P.P.S. Ubode also acts as a gallery and can be hired out for events. Now there’s a thought!
