The city sits nestled in the foothills of Mt Wellington, a mountain made for biking and walking, and at the edge of the River Derwent, a haven for water sport lovers. It is home to some of Australia’s best arts festivals, and some of the best food that the island has on offer.

Dark Mofo and MONA FOMA
The Museum of Old and New Art or MONA is in the Moorilla Winery on the Berriedale peninsula. In it you can explore art and antiquities, and it has been described as a subversive adult Disneyland. The Museum’s indoor collection is updated regularly, but it draws attention through its outdoor festivals. MONA FOMA is Tasmania’s largest contemporary music festival, curated by Brian Ritchie, bass player for the Violent Femmes. It is not just about music, but incorporates theatre, dance, visual art, performance and new media too, from The Flaming Lips to Gilbert and George. Ethos Eat Drink
When you go for dinner at Ethos Eat Drink, you’ll have an experience like you’ve never had before. Situated in a space that used to be the stables of the Old Hobart Hotel, it is 200 years old and boasts Tasmania’s oldest plumbed toilet. They offer a daily set menu using local ingredients sourced from artisan suppliers. When you arrive, you’re asked if there are foods that you don’t want to eat or are allergic to, and then what you would like to drink. Fullers Bookshop
Tasmania’s leading independent bookshop, Fullers has been around since the 1920s. In the main shopping area, it has a café inside. The Henry Jones Art Hotel
Australia’s first dedicated art hotel, it is a waterfront hotel with art and design woven into it’s very being. It can be a bit on the pricey side, but they have some fine cocktails and local beers and ciders on offer. www.thehenryjones.com

Oh I’ve never been to Tasmania, I’m just above it in Melbourne! I’d love to give it a visit one day, I heard it’s gorgeous but a little cold. Sometimes I feel sorry for Tasmania, so left out and even forgotten!
