The Shelbourne Dublin – A Renaissance Hotel

Our Stay in Photos

I always feel when passing The Shelbourne that there is something magically glamorous but yet warmly inviting about the hotel. It could be the fact that it’s one of Dublin’s most luxurious Five Star Hotel’s. Maybe it’s because some of the most famous people in the world have stayed there. Or it might be because it is steeped in Irish history, having seen Dublin through the last 191 years. It will most likely see it through another century and more … oh if only its walls could talk!

I shared with you my Afternoon Tea at The Shelbourne experience which takes place in the Lord Mayor’s Lounge but I didn’t share with you my stay there that same day … well I’m about to now and the best way to do that is through photo’s.

Patrick and I stayed at the world-famous hotel last year and although our stay there was short (one night only), there is no denying that it was memorable.

Our Room at The Shelbourne Dublin

The Shelbourne Hotel has 265 rooms including 19 suites. We stayed in the Darrell Figgis Room which is a Heritage One Bedroom Suite that looks out onto Stephen’s Green, or Park View as it’s called at The Shelbourne.

The room included a hallway, living room/sitting room, bedroom and bathroom. It was big and it was beautiful.

 

The large windows in both the living room and the bedroom looked out onto Stephen’s Green. This south-facing position allowed for the rooms to be filled with plenty of natural light during the day. At night the glow of the street lights could be seen and the hustle and bustle of nightlife imagined.

The interior design – colour scheme and furnishings were luxurious and looked no different to the photo’s on the hotel’s website. Special touches were thoughtfully placed throughout the suite.

Those Five Star Touches

Touches like the carefully chosen artwork that adorned the walls, the books, worth reading eloquently scattered on the coffee table …

 

… A nespresso machine for your daily or hourly caffeine fix, a radio and iPod dock … Complimentary wired or wireless internet.

The marble bathroom with its tempting bathtub and separate shower unit was spacious and sparkling.

Elemis products graced the shelves. Vanity mirrors highlighted the reflection of my own delighted eyes. A relaxing soak was on the cards later that night.

The bedroom had a king sized bed, of course.

Flat screen T.V., aforementioned large park facing window and all the other features you’d expect in a Five Star Hotel room … robes, slippers et cetera.

The bed was deliciously comfortable, so good we slept through the alarm clock the next morning … but not too late for the Shelbourne Hotel breakfast. Now that would be sinful. It was a great spread, where one could choose from fresh fruit and a Continental Breakfast to a Full Irish Fry and freshly brewed coffee.

Things to do at The Shelbourne

It would be easy to spend your whole stay in your room and the hotel without venturing outside. The Lord Mayor’s Lounge for Afternoon Tea. No. 27 Bar & Lounge for oysters. The Shelbourne Museum for a history lesson. The Horseshoe Bar for a tipple or three. The Saddle Room for dinner. The Spa at The Shelbourne to relax and rewind. The newly launched Salon at the Shelbourne to get pampered.

However with shopping on Grafton Street, Irish Design in The Creative Quarter, theatre at The Gaeity, bars on Dawson Street and nature in the park … you don’t really have far to go anyway.

The Five Star Shelbourne Hotel

The Shelbourne hotel is wonderful. The hotel itself is a beautiful building and the Five Star service shone through its staff. The little touches like fresh lemonade and cookies at reception and macaroons in our room when we arrived all stand out. I couldn’t find fault. Neither could Patrick and his review impressed his mother so much she booked herself a room for two nights a few weeks later!

I look forward to staying there again one day but to keep my withdrawal symptoms at bay, I’ll just have to book myself into The Spa at the Shelbourne, or maybe I should drop very big hints (Patrick if you’re reading this) … I’ll let you know how that goes.
