I wear a lot of black clothing both for work and play. I love wearing black but I am also fond of a splash colour when I do wear it head to toe. Depending on the outfit this splash of colour can come in the shape of accessories, make-up or nail polish and can often prevent me from looking like some sort of reject ninja.

When I’m not getting my nails ‘did’ in a salon, I’m doing them myself and with summer comes summer colours and the newest additions, which all hail from the US of A, to my already heafty stockpile of varnishes and polishes are mostly bright with some neons and a dip into the dark. Now although I would consider most of my haul quite summery in colour, they can also be worn all year round and I think there is nothing better than catching a glimpse of your brightly and precisly painted finger nails to put a twinkle in your eye and a smirk on your lips. Add to that the ‘oh I love your nail colour’ compliment and sure you’re away on a hack.

Jessica Pink Explosion, Orange Zest and Purple Burst, are all from the Irish based The French Beauty Room. They can be bought seperately in a 14.8ml size bottle for €14.25 or as part of a set of five nail varnishes which include a Purple Burst 7.4ml, Pink Explosion 7.4ml, Orange Zest 7.4ml, Reward Basecoat 7.4ml and Brilliance Topcoat 7.4ml called the Jessica Awesome Neon Set for €27.50. I got my hands on three of the 7.4ml varnishes as product reviews and I love their bright neon colours. I did find that I had to paint quite a few coats on but the varnish dries quickly so it didn’t bother me. The varnishes are fresh and fun and the smaller mini sizes are perfect for throwing into your daily makeup bag if you are on the go.

OPI Nein! Neinl! Nein! Ok Fine €13.50 and OPI Strawberry Margarita €14.50 from Debenhams actually came my way as part of a thank you from Alpro when I blogged my way through a week’s worth of delicious smoothies. You can read the final article here. I hadn’t used OPI Nail Lacquer before, but on first impressions I was impressed with the 15ml bottles and the colours. The polish has a great flow to it and only took a couple of coats to cover my nails which is really important especially when using a darker colour like the Nein Nein one. The Strawberry Margarita is a subtle but effect shade of pink to make the boys wink and looks great on toes. It also lasts so although it was my first time to use this brand, it won’t be my last.

Wet n Wild Megalast Milk and Need a Refresh-Mint both €2.99 and Wet n Wild Wild Shine Protective Base Coat and Matt Top Coat, both €1.99 are absolute steals. Available nationwide from Penney’s and Dunnes Stores to your local Pharmacy, there is one thing that these polishes have in common and that is they are all fabulous. Sometimes when you see cheap, you get cheap and the quality is lacking but not so with these little beauts. The Milk colour has a fab nude look, the Need a Refresh-Mint is touching on that Tiffany Blue I love. The polish brushes are wide and flat giving great coverage. The base coat is strong and the Matt Top Coat gives a brilliant effect over brightly coloured nails, as can be seen below used over the Jessica Orange Zest polish.
