1. Flights and transport

The majority of travellers will fly into Miami using one of two major airports: Miami International Airport (MIA) or Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL). MIA is more centrally located if you’re planning to take public transport like the Metrobus or Metrorail but if you’re renting a car FLL is another option. Both airports can get pretty busy, so to remove as much of the stress of travelling with children as you can you might want to consider taking a private jet to Miami.

It’s worth noting that cabs can be expensive in Miami and during rush hour travel can take a long time. In addition, if you are travelling with very small children you may need to bring a booster seat or car seat when hiring a car or taking a cab.

2. Kid-Friendly Hotels

To minimise the amount of travelling you need to do while you’re touring, try to book a child-friendly hotel in the general area that you want to spend most of your time, e.g. the beach. Choose hotels that have kid-friendly pools, rec rooms, a private beach, and other kid-friendly activities lined up so that your little ones can have a thrilling time while you enjoy a nice time relaxing.

3. Dressing for the Weather

While it’s true that Miami gets a lot of sunshine and can be humid (so sun cream is a must), it’s not immune to heavy rain from time to time so bring some spare clothes, waterproof jackets, ponchos and umbrellas. There is also a chance of hurricanes between June and November but between March and May you should see plenty of sun and temperatures in the high 20°C to 30°C. It’s also important to pack hats and sunglasses.

4. Kid-friendly Activities

The beach is a popular choice with families and Matheson Hammock Park is a particularly kid-friendly option as there are no waves thanks to a man-made reef). In Crandon Park, you’ll find a 2-mile beach with palm trees as well as a Family Amusement Centre, tennis courts, a carousel and a roller rink.

The Everglades are an absolute must for families so why not take a tour through the wetlands and the wildlife? Kids will love spotting crocodiles in the wild. Alternatively, you can find even more animals at the Miami Seaquarium, Zoo Miami or even Biscayne National Park. In the park you’ll find Biscayne Bay which is home to barrier reefs and the Biscayne Bay Lagoon is a great place to see turtles and dolphins.
