Afternoon Tea at The Westbury Hotel, Dublin

The Westbury Hotel, Grafton Street, Dublin 2

The Westbury Hotel stands just off of Grafton Street in all its Five Star glory. It’s in an ideal location if you’re visiting Dublin for shopping and sight-seeing but when I visited the hotel today, I wasn’t in Dublin City Centre for either, I was there for The Westbury Hotel’s Afternoon Tea.

I’d heard great things about their Afternoon Tea dining and with statements on their website like …

Relax in the elegant environs of The Gallery and immerse yourself in a Dublin Institution – Afternoon Tea at The Westbury Hotel.

… I wanted to check it out for myself so I booked a table for Patrick and I for a little after noon. Patrick had never experienced Afternoon Tea before so I was looking forward to his reaction and thought there’d be no better place for him to be introduced to this little bit of culture that has become so popular amongst young and old foodies alike.

We were greeted and seated at a small round table and antique chairs at the what I can only say is the best view in The Gallery, as the window we sat at looked right out onto the hustle and bustle that is Grafton Street. This hustle and bustle was seen but not heard and although there was no music playing in The Gallery it didn’t have the awkward silence you could expect but instead had a sort of buzz about it as groups and couples chattered, laughed and savoured their dining experience.

When we first sat down our friendly hostess explained the menu and left us to choose our drinks. Shortly after we were greeted by a knowledgeable and smiling waiter who recommended our champagne and later our hot beverage choices. Our Moet & Chandon Rose champagne arrived with blueberries that looked like they were having a great time swimming in the bubbles. I had a great time eating said blueberries a little later.

Next up were our teas and our sandwiches. I chose the Jasmine Pearl, China tea with jasmine blossom, Patrick the Darjeeling tea. Our sandwiches, with the crusts cut off of course, were …

Honey baked Limerick ham, whiskey mustard relish on malt harvest Roast gold label turkey breast, fresh herb and shallot butter stuffing, cranberry jelly on milk pan Oak smoked Salmon and Crab with lemon aioli on malt harvest Free range egg and chive mayonnaise on milk pan

Each sandwich was fresh, tasty and perfectly presented. If I had to choose my favourite, it would have to be the turkey one. Patrick’s was the egg.

Our empty sandwich plate taken away, tea’s topped up, we were next treated to a delicious surprise – Chocolate Mouse, Strawberry Confit and Caramelised Rice Krispies. My goodness was it delicious … chocolatey but light with a burst of strawberry and rise krispies crunch. Fantastic.

Lips licked, coffee ordered and next to arrive at our table was a three tier of …

Handmade cranberry buttermilk fruit and plain Scones, served with cream and berry preserves Miniature handmade desserts

The scones were warm and perfectly baked, not too crumbly but soft and strong enough to take a fine helping of jam and cream. As it is St. Patrick’s Weekend the talented Pastry Chefs went all out when it came to our Miniature Handmade Desserts and the colours of the Irish flag shone proudly from the first and second tiers.

Our waiter did explain each offering but as I wanted to share with you he kindly arranged for the selections to be written down for me. The desserts looked amazing and tasted fantastic, an absolute credit to the Chefs involved who have obvious talent. These are what we delightfully enjoyed …

White chocolate mouse with orange glaze and marshmallow

Mango puree with biscuit crumble, vanilla panna cotta and lime jelly

Apricot compot, vanilla chantilly cream and fresh grape macaroon

We both really enjoyed our experience at The Westbury Hotel for our Afternoon Tea wining and dining. The food was delicious. The service was friendly, polite and knowledgeable. We even received a box of Irish Chocolates to take home with us!
