Today Patrick, Smith and I took part in the Avonmore Slimline Milk Great Pink Run for Breast Cancer Ireland.  Taking the option of the Family 5k fun run rather than the 10K, Patrick and I ran, jogged and speed walked the distance along with other experienced and novice runners. Smith slept soundly for the majority of the 5K only waking at the finish line, just in time for his afternoon feed.

The sun shone brightly for the whole event. Looking around we were far from the only mum and dad with baby in tow. There were friends, couples, parents, grandparents and children, mostly dressed in pink but all there for one reason – to create awareness for Breast Cancer and to raise money for Breast Cancer Ireland. All those involved appeared happy and excited to be part of something special even though for many the reason they were there was due to loss and bereavement. You couldn’t help but feel a tug at your heart-strings as you saw custom t-shirts with beautiful faces and the names of never to be forgotten loved ones.

From our experience the Great Pink Run was well organised and a great family event. Set in the beautiful Phoenix Park, the route took us up and down hill, around bends and through woods but the volunteers kept us on the right track and were full of words of encouragement and support … helping to give us the ‘eye of the tiger’ for every kilometre we achieved.

At the finish line, where participants family and friends proudly cheered, we were presented with medals and met with bottles of water and fresh fruit. Then it was photo’s and selfies all around and time to go.
