Benefit – The POREfessional and Hello Flawless Oxygen WOW
With my wedding looming nearer, I’ve been thinking about my wedding make-up and my next day make-up and my honeymoon make-up … If you read The Life of Stuff regularly you’ll know that I’m a fan of Benefit’s They’re Real Mascara and I’ve always been a fan of Benefit’s girlie, 1950’s style, retro packaging but strange as it may sound I hadn’t actually tested out their foundations or primers until very recently. Yes that’s right very recently. I remember a friend of mine swearing by their makeup many years ago and I have to say her makeup bag was delightful looking but I still never bothered giving it a go. I don’t know why really. Anyway not so long ago I was treated to a makeup trial/session, courtesy of a thoughtful friend. It was perfect timing as I was getting an itch to try something new, make-up-wise that is, and with my foundation coming to an end it was the perfect occasion to try what may become a new makeup essential!
My trial took place on my work lunch-time in the beauty hall of Clery’s in Dublin. I was well looked after and made up by a very down to earth make-up artist. She explained what she used step by step and showed me the results step by step. The final result was a fresh looking face with eye liner-ed eyes, highlighted cheekbones and glistening lips. Nice. What was even nicer was the fact that that same evening I was heading out so no better chance to test the products I was wearing … and that’s how I came to buy The POREfessional and Hello Flawless Oxygen WOW … that’s a mouthful eh!
At €34 The POREfessional may seem a little on the pricey side, or maybe not depending on how much you normally spend on primer. If you don’t use a primer, fair play but makeup artists do recommend that you do in order to keep your foundation on your face for longer. The POREfessional is a ‘PRO balm’ used ‘to minimize the appearance of pores’ and ‘fine lines and help makeup stay put’. So what does this mean. Well it means that if you have big pores and a shiny face, this stuff will sort you out. Oh and having a shiny face doesn’t mean spots. I am quite susceptible to a shine around my forehead and my nose, the t-zone basically, so I was all ears when I heard that there was a multi-award winning product to help combat this and fine lines!
Verdict: The fact that the tub doesn’t seem that big for €34 is deceiving as you only need to use the smallest of amounts of the formula and I’ve been advised that it should last six months or longer. The ticket to using the primer is to cleanse your face and moisturise it. When you moisturiser has dried, use a pea size amount and work the primer from the centre of the face out. Ta Da! Done. You can now carry on your day shine free with smaller pores and your fine lines minimised or you can add some foundation and the rest of your make-up. That’s the step I normally take. I have to say that it really glides on, it’s the added silicon, and it smells so fresh. Benefit do recommend that if your pores come out of hiding later in the day you can add a dab and pat it over your makeup in the problem areas and blend. This is something I did have to do, pores will be pores! The POREfessional is only new to me but I’ve a feeling it will be part of my essentials for a while.
Hello Flawless Oxygen WOW
With a name like that you’d be expecting a lil gust of air and a wow when you open the pretty packaging. It doesn’t happen but what does happen is that you are presented with a fine sized bottle of ‘brightening makeup’. This foundation set me back €35, not bad for a foundation that promises to help ‘boost respiration for a plumping effect, helps protect against environmental stresses, contains vitamin C & E derivatives known to prevent the signs of aging’ in other words your skin can breathe, the foundation is SPF 25 and it’s oil-free.
Verdict: The ivory ‘I’m so pure for sure’ shade was perfect for my skin-tone. It is quite liquid in form but not overly. When I apply I use my fingertips although they do recommend a makeup brush. I’m sure I’ll give that a go at some point but for now I’ll continue to use my digits. I really liked the way the foundation went on, which was easily. They say you can build it up from light to medium coverage which is so true and the great thing about doing this depends on what look you are going for. It really builds up easily but not so much that you feel it’s caked on. It dries on matt, which is great for a t-zone but it doesn’t have a dry look, my skin felt soft with it on which is what you want your face to feel. Hello Flawless … I won’t be saying goodbye in a hurry.
