Sustainable Living Can Save You Money
Living a more sustainable lifestyle is often presented as being something of a chore. It is also often presented as something that you can only do if you have lots of money to spend on expensive eco brands. This does not have to be the case at all!
You can have a great life and save money by embracing sustainability, as the below ways to sustainable living can save you money will prove …
6 Ways Sustainable Living Can Save You Money
1 – Lower Energy Costs
Living a more sustainable lifestyle very often means consuming less energy. Whether you have solar panels on your home, triple-glazed windows or you simply choose electronic devices that use less energy, you end up owing less money to the eclectic companies, and right now when prices are set to go through the roof, that can only be a good thing, right?

2 – Reusing Things
A really obvious way you can save money when you live sustainably is by switching to reusable products. When you reuse the same cotton bud over and over (yes you really can get reusable cotton buds) or you turn your old jam jars into storage jars, you will naturally not need to buy as many new products in your day-to-day life, which means more money left in your bank account and less of an impact on the earth, which is pretty much a win-win.
3 – Buying Second-hand
Buying sustainable clothing is a great way to live a more environmentally friendly lifestyle, but you know what is even better? Buying second hand. Whether you scour the charity shops for a bargain or go hunting in the vintage clothing boutique, it is so easy to spend so much less on adding to your wardrobe when you buy clothing that has already been used before.
Even better, why not get together with your friends and have your own swap shop. Each bring along a few items of clothing you no longer love or wear and swap them for something you really do love for a carbon-neutral way to dress your best.
Or if you have children, and have family and friends with children too, then encourage the culture of ‘hand-me-downs’.
- Children love it as they get to wear their ‘big’ cousins clothes.
- It’s an excellent way ‘Sustainable Living Can Save You Money’.
- It’s a fantastic way to get the most out of clothing.
- And a super way to keep them from the scrapheap (prematurely).
In Ireland, we send 63,000 tonnes of textiles to landfill per year, and almost half of what we donate to charity shops and clothes banks enters the global textile trade, with often devastating consequences for the countries they’re offloaded on.
4 – Stop Buying Stuff
Okay, so you will still need to buy the essentials in life, and no one is saying that you can’t buy a treat or two now and again, but when you embrace sustainable living, and you really think carefully about every purchase you make, it is often the case that you stop wanting random things. You stop consuming at the same rate you once did, and this means that you automatically start to save money too.
Living with less sounds like a terrible idea to many people but when it frees up your time and money to see friends, have fun experiences and enjoy nature, it is easy to see how you have a better deal than you did when you were mindlessly consuming.
5 – Grow Your Own
Growing your own food is a great way to lead a more sustainable lifestyle because you can cut your food miles to practically zero. It is also a lot of fun if you are looking for a new hobby to take up, and if you have kids, it’s a great way of teaching them about the natural world and where food comes from too.
Once you know what you are doing, you can grow your own fruit and veg for pennies and save a small fortune on your grocery bills in the process.

So not only one of the great ways sustainable living can save you money – but a way it could make you money too!
