The First Pink Port – Croft Pink Port
This is a time of year that the sales of sherry and port wines go through the roof in Ireland. Nearly all the sales of these types of wines happen around this time of year. sherry and port are fortified wines. Fortified wines are wines that have a distilled spirit added to them to increase the level of alcohol, bringing them up to the 17% – 20% level. Sherry and port are the most famous fortified wines but madeira and marsala are becoming increasingly popular.
No longer are these wines limited to the older generation, they are becoming very popular with younger drinkers. I suppose the appeal of these drinks are that they are sipping wines. People can sit back and relax over a glass much like they would with a fine whiskey.
These wines range from dry to sweet, light to full-bodied with loads of character and flavour.
So if you have never tried a fortified wine before and you would like to ease yourself into the world of fortified wines this week’s ‘Bevvy of the Week; is a perfect choice to do just that.
This weeks bevvy is a port Wine produced by Croft called Croft Pink. Croft are one of the largest producers of port in Portugal (port come from Portugal, sherry comes from Spain, madeira is produced on the island of Madeira and marsala is produced in Italy ) and they produce some excellent wines.
Croft Pink is a newish style of port. It’s pink in colour, light and fresh and has loads of fruit flavour. It is really nice served chilled with some ice. It’s also popular mixed in cocktails.
Croft Pink comes in a 700ml bottle and is 19.5% abv. It will cost around €17 per bottle. For more on Croft Pink visit their website here.
