Must Visit Restaurants in Canggu #1
SKOOL Kitchen
Right off the bat, here’s why you need to list SKOOL Kitchen on your itinerary of restaurants to visit in Canggu – the fire, natural woods, and charcoal embers touch every menu at SKOOL. Beyond the primitive cooking, showcasing the best meat quality, you won’t want to skip the wine list. While waiting for your ‘smoky wagyu tomahawk’, take the chance to relax on the sofa outdoors, sip wine, and enjoy the sunset over the Indian Ocean. Perfectly grilled meat, ocean breeze, and modern vibe, that’s what we call a perfect dinner!

2. HOME by Chef Wayan
Considering visiting HOME by Chef Wayan? Well The OnBali expert Mariia Ipatova might just cement your decision; “If you love authentic Balinese dishes in Canggu, this is where you should go!” and we couldn’t agree more. Like its name, the restaurant has been designed to feel like an extension of Chef Wayan’s home, where he welcomes visitors before serving traditional Balinese dishes like Ayam Serosop, or pan-seared chicken, and Betutu Bakar, Balinese smoked chicken.
What struck us most about the restaurant is the humbleness of the place. It’s far from flashy as you might expect from a chef who has worked in Michelin-starred restaurants in New York and Chicago. But the heart and soul of the restaurant is in the food, and it’s a guarantee that you will taste the passion and the care that goes into creating every bite in each dish. Beware, though, some of the dishes can be pretty spicy, so ask the waiter to recommend dishes to suit your palate or you’ll end up with a face red from heat, not the sun!
3. Sa’Mesa
We’re ranking Sa’Mesa in our top restaurants in Canggu guide because no other restaurant comes close to the exciting experience of dining at Sa’Mesa. Unlike the usual scenario where you enter the restaurant, sit down (solo, with your dining partner or family and friends) and choose from the menu, Sa’Mesa is a shared dining experience. Yes you heard correctly – you’ll be sharing food with strangers throughout a 15 to 20 curated course menu over a two to three hour sitting.
Sa’Mesa takes the concept from the idea of the ‘Italian Grandma‘, referred to as La Nonna Carmela, who likes to invite everyone for dinner. And what’s excellent about Sa’Mesa is that the menu changes every night! So even if you visit three nights in a row, you’ll get the chance to taste different Italian food. And who doesn’t love a free flow of limoncello?

4. The Avocado Factory
Raise your hands if you are a die-hard fan of the avocado! I know our ears certainly pricked up when we found out about The Avocado Factory. Where believe it or not, every dish at the cafe has avocado, from breakfast staples like Eggs Benedict to Asian favourites like Avo Green Ramen and Asian Fried Rice. You won’t see anything like it anywhere else in Bali!
And if you think not every meal needs avocado, wait until you try Avo Steaks & Eggs. It’s a favourite dish on the menu because the avocado elevates the taste of the eggs and steak, bringing a fresh take on an otherwise boring dish. Another thing to love about The Avocado Factory is the place. The semi-open space brings in natural lights, and the avocado-green accents on the interior make it one of the best restaurants in Canggu for us, even in Bali!
5. Sushimi
If you are craving Japanese food, you can rely on Sushimi to feed you well! The Japanese restaurant uses the sushi train concept, which means you can pick different rolls or nigiri to fill your heart’s content – from the classic Tuna Avocado and California to Tuna Sambal Matah and Eel Cream Cheese.

If you can wait until Fridays each week, Sushimi has one of the best deals for restaurants in Canggu. You only pay 20K for all the plates on the sushi train! From the many Japanese restaurants in Bali, Sushimi remains a favourite because guests never leave hungry – and the curved bamboo accent doesn’t look bad on your Insta feed, either!
Canggu lives up to its reputation as the trendiest spot on the island, especially when it comes to the dining scene. These five spots represent the best restaurants in Canggu and the variety of culinary landscape in Bali. If you’re currently in Canggu and always on the lookout for where to grab breakfast or or planning your next visit and noting where the best place to have Italian food is, this guide should be good as a starting point.
