What is Zumba?
Zumba is a Latin and international rhythm inspired dance fitness program that incorporates many different types of dance and fitness moves. Dance styles that are included in the programme are samba, salsa, mambo, merenge, hip-hop and belly dancing. Zumba has become so popular, that over 15 million people take classes in over 180 countries every week! It has even branched out into the likes of Aqua Zumba and Zumba Toning.
This video which has over 96 million views gives you an idea of some of the moves you can expect to bust at a class.
Now don’t be put off by the hyper, toned, energiser bunny moves of the instructor as she is obviously THE instructor … you may not have her fitness and skill yet but you can aspire to it so instead concentrate on the lively beats of the music, the fun dance moves and the fact that it beats the treadmill or cross-trainer hands down.
In fact I’ve read that you can burn over 500 calories in one Zumba class! And although I am far from a calorie counter, I do know is that an average woman’s healthy allowance is 1500 calories and an average man’s allowance is 2000 calories a day, so the fact that you can burn a third or quarter of your daily allowance in one hour has to be good!
So lets get to the nitty gritty and let me answer some questions you may have about Zumba Fitness before you sign up … because you should sign up!
Who is it for?
It’s for everyone! Young, old, big, small, tall, short, man, woman or child! The classes I’ve attended was for women only and it included women of every shape, size and age. As Zumba has become so popular, you are sure to find a class to suit you.
Do you need a partner?
The simple answer is no but it’s always fun to have someone to laugh at, and with, when you’re trying to pull moves like Shakira.
What do you wear?
Wear what you like to wear when keeping fit and make sure it’s comfortable. It’s advisable to wear trainers as you’re bound (no pun intended) to jump about and you don’t want sore feet or blisters. As I mentioned in the My Boxfit Review post women/ladies … make sure you wear a good sports bra.
What do you do?
You follow the instructor and Do Your Best! Try not to feel too self conscious, you are more than likely NOT the worst person at Zumba it in the room. Don’t be hard on yourself if you can’t get the moves right, you’ll be better the next time and so on. Remember that everyone is there for the same reason you are, to get fit and enjoy getting fit so let your hair down, feel the music, let go and dance your socks off because the more you put in the more you’ll get out!
Zumba has become very popular in Ireland over the past five or six years so you should be able to find a class near you, and keep an eye open for online deals as there are some great bargains out there.
