Beastie Boys – ILL COMMUNICATION, 1994
With the year anniversary of legendary Adam ‘MCA’ Yauch’s death last Saturday, May 4th and the fact that this month marks the 19th anniversary of the Beastie Boys ILL Communication album … it is quite fitting that it’s my Listen of the Week. I love this album. I was 15 years old when it was released. I don’t think I owned it when I was 15, I can’t remember having it on tape. I have no cookie memories to share about when I first heard sabotage or how I knew every word of Get it Together, no memories of loosing one converse in a mosh at the local disco to Sure Shot. What I can tell you is that I really don’t listen to these guys, enough … is it too late for a new years resolution? MCA was a talented rapper, musician and film maker (check out his debut Gunnin’ for that #1 Spot). He was also a Human Rights Activist (check out his involvement with the Tibetan Freedom Concert). He was a young man that the world lost to cancer and I think whether you can relate to his music or not you can most definitely relate to effects cancer has on us, we’ve all been effected by it in one way or the other, either personally, through those we know or through those we love. Pause.
Anyhoo enough of my ramblings. I have this evening included videos for track one, Sure Shot – a brilliant live video and for track 6, Sabotage.
